Back To Basics: Giving Back To God
By Minister Cheryll “STORM” Cooks
God’s Elect Ministries

During this time and season, I have heard a lot (and I mean a lot) about the 12 days of Christmas; and during this time and season people are always concerned about the New Year and their resolutions.

The 12 days of Christmas focuses primarily with what one’s true love has given to them over a 12 day period.  It’s a rhythmic melody about the gifts given which always increase in value, coinciding with the numbered day . . . on the first day of Christmas their true love gives them 1 thing, on the second day of Christmas their true love gives them 2 things and so on and so on.

But what if we got back to basics?  You know . . . The fundamentals, the essential nitty-gritty ABC’s of things and turned this little rhythmic melody on its ear.  What if we decided to give back?  What if we turned our open- give me hands into uplifted here you are hands?  What if we actually decided to acknowledge something other than God’s giving to us?  What if we got back to basics and remembered to acknowledge HIS Faithfulness, HIS Grace and HIS Mercy and not only during this time and season but every day . . . Or at least all the time?!

Here we go; you can sing in time or just think on these things. . . On the first day of CHRIST-mas my TRUE and FIRST love (Revelation 2:4) got from me a great big thank you!  On the second day of CHRIST-mas my TRUE and FIRST love got from me 2 more I Love You’s. . .(as we move through) . . . On the fifth day of CHRIST-mas my TRUE and FIRST love got from me 5 more minutes of my time and so on and so on. . . And we make our way all the way through to the twelfth day of CHRIST-mas or to the 12th day of the month then all we have to do is pray and repeat and before you know it we’ve gotten back to basics for a whole entire month.  At that point, we just take our cue from the Energizer Bunny and keep going and going and going from one month to the next.

Resolutions. . . Ahhhh! Sweet New Year’s Resolutions!

We resolve to do so many things . . .lose weight, stop smoking, change our hair, for some - drink less, spend less money, buy less shoes (I know, I know… but shoes needed its own separate acknowledgement), stop cursing, stop speeding, deal with fears, drop bad-habits, drop bad boy-friends and the list goes on and on.  Every year we go round and round and most of the time without the merry (get it – merry go round) with nothing or almost nothing to show for those same old resolutions at the end of the year!

In 2012, why don’t we resolve to get back to basics? Why don’t we resolve to be more obedient to God and His Word; and for some that would mean resolving to read His Word more than on Sunday morning when the Preacher gives the scripture?  We can resolve to be kind(er); resolve to live by the Golden Rule - to treat others as we would want to be treated (Matthew 7:12).  We can resolve to have no other God before Him (Exodus 20:3) this includes all the things that we make into small gods like food, money, and man (eating in excess, alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, sleep in excess, drugs, men, and for men it would be women, shoes in excess, clothes in excess, education and thinking we did it on our own, other people in general) and anything else that we place before God.

You may be thinking, “Well, that doesn’t apply to me.”  Do me and yourselves a favor and pay attention to the first thing you think about upon rising in the morning, what you do all day, and the last thing you think about at night before going to sleep.  Once you honestly do those things then try sticking to your “that’s not me” story.

Basic Steps. . .

If you want and or need to come up with your own 12 days of CHRIST-mas melody for this time and every season, just think about what HE’s already done and the love HE’s already given and shown.  Do what you know is right(eous), pray, and repeat every 12 days.

If you want a really good place to start your re-vamped and renewed New Year’s Resolutions, read Exodus the 20th  and Matthew the 7th  chapters respectively.
If you want to be unleashed in 2012- unleashed into the best that God created you to be, getting the best that God has to for you. . . resolve to start with these simple, yet in-depth things and . . . GET BACK TO BASICS! bug
