The Detriment of Normalcy
By Myla Denise

In order to reach our full potential we have to be willing to leave the realm of normalcy.  Extraordinary experiences happen when we remove ourselves from our usual locations, environments, and most importantly, our normal sensibility.  The comfort associated with normalcy can cloud our judgment and limit our thinking, which ultimately leads down a path to complacency.

I had the incredible opportunity to spend four consecutive months traveling around the world.  I boarded a ship and prepared to spend countless hours and thousands of miles sailing the open ocean.  There was nothing resembling my normal life and that’s what made it extraordinary.  I woke up every morning looking out at the majestic sky and enormous ocean.  My mind was free.  I looked out and saw no limitations which infused my mind with no limitations.  I left normal behind in exchange for exceptional.

Most would consider me to be free.  Since graduating from college I’ve lived in four states and traveled to more than fifteen countries.  Even though I live freely, it is while I am traveling that I find myself most uninhibited.  Limitations disappear.  Fear dissipates.  The answer to every question, not just most, becomes, “Why not?”  Would you like to climb a mountain?  Would you like to slide down rocks in a water well?  Would you like to go kayaking?  My answer to all of these questions was, “Why not?”

It was because I was in South Africa that I climbed Lion’s Head Mountain.  It was because I was in Malaysia that I slid down natural rock slides at the Seven Wells Waterfall.  It was because I was in Honduras that I got into a kayak for the first time.  As free as I am, I had to separate myself from my normal surroundings in order to have extraordinary experiences—experiences that will remain with me for many years to come.  We only reach extraordinary when we are willing to do and be more than what we’ve always done.

What extraordinary experience would you like to have?  What have you been putting off because of fear?  What have others convinced you is out of your league or out of your range of possibility?  And more importantly, why do you believe it?

The idea that life and possibility are meant to be feared is an untruth.  We should respect life, not fear living it.  Try something bold.  Allow your dreams to breathe.  Entertain those grand thoughts.  Climb that mountain.  Slide down the rock of possibility.  Step out into the water.  You could remain on the shore, but where’s the story in that?  When you make the decision to move despite fear, you learn to embrace trust.  When you free yourself from the idea of normal, you make room for remarkable.  When you release yourself from a constant state of limits and lack, you unleash infinite possibilities and ultimately, a boundless you. bug
