Hot…as in RED HOT?
By Rusti Banagas – BDG Interiors

Nothing says “hot” like the bold touch of red paints. Brighten up your world by adding this delicious color to any room in your home.
First, you’ll need to start with the exact color that is right for you. I would like you to step out of your comfort zone. After all, this is one of the ways we grow, right? Do you want to go with a bright vibrant red? This would be the color of a RED HOT candy. It is also the same color the Chinese wear and use in design as it keeps away bad fortune. Maybe you are a warmer shade of Bordeaux. This would be the color of a deep red wine shimmering in the sun. Pick the color that best suits you, but it must also excite you.
Most home improvement stores now have mini paint sample cans that you can purchase for about $3.00. My suggestion is that you head down to your local store and really take the time to choose a few samples. After you have come up with three choices, have them mixed and bring them home. Rule of thumb…you never want more then three choices.
Alright, one major step accomplished. Now that you have your three samples you are going to want to pick three small sample walls. Make sure they are walls you see everyday, as you will be deciding on color over the next few days to a week. Take your time and get it exactly right.
Now that you have your sample wall space picked out, you will paint three boxes of color. You can go as big as you want to, but at least 12” x 6”. The point to painting your sample boxes is to really know if you can live with the color you have selected. Red is bold, so must be done perfectly. Look at them until you love one of them.
Let’s say you have decided to do the master bedroom. First, I would say that is an excellent choice and then I would suggest starting with an accent wall. The wall your headboard is on is a wonderful place to begin. After you are done…make sure all bedding and draperies go perfectly with your new masterpiece. Start slowly and later if you would like to add the other walls, I say GO FOR IT.
It may be easier to start with any room that is economically feasible. For example, if you already have red accents in the living room, then start with the living room. Take a small fabric sample with you when you pick out your paints. The reds should not match perfectly. Create some depth by having a few reds in the mix.
Live out loud, be daring, be fun and paint a space that makes you HAPPY!!
