Ahhh… Can you feel it?! There is a difference in the atmosphere! Yes, it is a new year, but there is something more, something different, and something fresh! We’ve been called to something new… no more doing life as usual (Isaiah 43: 18, 19). It’s time to burst out of the old and not look back (Philippians 3:12-14)! It’s time to embrace real change- change that will be purposeful, exciting, and lasting! It’s time to embrace your life and let the real you emerge! Who are you? Where are you headed? There is a certain place that you are supposed to possess and maintain but it won’t be done by making the regular old New Year’s resolutions. It is time for a revolution! So, what is the difference?
A resolution is an intention. It’s a commitment that people make to a personal goal, project, or the reforming of a habit; a goal someone sets out to accomplish in the upcoming year (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary). Think about how many resolutions we have made. Some of us have made resolutions to lose weight, to coach a youth sports team, to go to church more regularly and be a working member, to find a mate, to volunteer in our community, to go to the gym, to stop smoking, to quit drinking, to work harder, to read the Bible more, to spend more time with the family, to spruce up our style, to finally open that business, … Oh, the list can go on and on.
When it comes to resolutions, we pick and choose certain areas of our lives that we think need improvements. However, because we usually do not make any real fundamental changes in our thinking, our commitment to change and our behavioral modifications are short lived. Weeks into the New Year, 78% of us fail and fall back into the same old thing (Wall Street Journal, 2009). At the end of the year, we experience the “would’ve, could’ve, and should’ve” moments- exiting the old year defeated but determined that things will be better in the upcoming year! Uugh, what a horrible cycle!
A revolution is a sudden, radical, or complete change; a fundamental change in political organization; especially the overthrow or renunciation of one government or ruler and the substitution of another by the governed; activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation; a fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something : a change of paradigm; a changeover in use or preference especially in technology (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary).
When we are involved in a revolution, we have developed the mindset that it is time to overthrow some stuff, especially the crazy thinking/belief system that we have allowed to govern our behavior. A revolutionist has a cause! A revolutionist has taken time to consider the impact of his or her beliefs and behaviors, as well as those of others. A revolutionist knows that life is not just about him or her! A revolutionist has determined that in order to make a better world, they themselves must radically change and cause radical changes in the world around them. Revolutionists are willing to take risks and give up things in pursuit of their cause! It time for a revolution!
What is your cause? What are you willing to overthrow? What are you willing to give up? It’s time to cut out the foolishness! You can no longer waver. You can no longer sit on the fence! You can no longer hold on to the past! Now is the time to run forward with purpose and passion- forward into your dreams, into your promised land! Run forward and don’t look back! Whatever is standing in the way of your destiny must be moved out of the way. Whoever is hindering you from the destiny God has ordained for you can no longer have a front row seat in your lives! Don’t hang out with people who always allow you to compromise your standards and beliefs! Surround yourself with people who celebrate you and your beliefs!
Are you ready for a revolution to break forth in your soul? Make the radical changes! Break out of the comfort zone! Adopt a healthy thought life and saturate yourself in things that will reinforce those healthy thoughts! When we change our thinking, our behavior will change. Reject the thoughts that say you don’t have the knack to be a business owner, a preacher, singer,… Reject the thoughts that say your opinion doesn’t matter! Reject those thoughts that say you are not the right skin color or size! It’s time to rebel against those things that have kept us captive- those excuses that stop us from reaching our God ordained destiny!
The time has come to stop living in denial. You know that you have been called to change and revolutionize the world around you. It starts with the revolution of your own soul! You know it! You feel it happening on the inside! When you finally allow yourself to step out and move past the fear, move past the doubt, and move past the negative voices that tell you can’t succeed, you will discover an unleashing of power within (Ephesians 3:20) that will enable you to breathe easily as you soar to heights that you can’t even imagine!
